Background Statement

Having identified the significance and high multiplier effect of a strong educational background in society, we have chosen to embark on a quest to build this core base for the youths. The aim is to specifically broaden the knowledge base of secondary school learners in Nigeria via the launch and sustainable running of the Obamedia Olympiad.

The journey began with Ebonyi state secondary schools.

Targets

Vision & Mission

To set a world-class standard of education with the growth of a versatile reasoning structure among students in Nigeria.

We aim to achieve this vision by;

  1. Organizing a Science Olympiad competition among senior secondary schools
  2. Encouraging a study culture across extensive subjects  among students relevant for their performance in examinations and diverse learning contents
  3. Recommendations for scholarship awards
  4. Developing a reward system for excellent school and student performances across the education board

Objectives

Scope of Competition

Selection Process: Two schools will be selected from each local government area on the recommendation of the Secondary Education Board or Ministry of Education, Ebonyi State. However special consideration will be given to schools such as science schools and technical schools. Contestants shall be selected from SS1 and SS2 as a way of preparing them for higher studies in their final year.

Subject Coverage: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geography, Computer Technology, Agricultural Science, Use of English, Technical Drawing and Economics. Questions will be streamlined to current WAEC, NECO, and UTME syllabuses. Teachers and lecturers will serve as education consults on the competition board.

Phases of Competition

Two phases’ vis-à-vis preliminary (zonal) contests and final contests as organized in the highlights below.

Preliminary Contest: Selected schools in each local government area will compete amongst themselves to produce a representative for the local government area for the inter-local government contests. Since they are 13 LGAs, six (6) LGAs will emerge in the first round. Then the others will compete with the 13th LGA to produce the 7th winner.

  • The next round will witness competitors among six (6) LGAs to produce 3 LGAs while the best loser will face the 7th LGA to produce the 4th winner for the state contest.
  • In summary, four (4) schools representing four (4) LGAs will take part in the final contest at the State Headquarters, Abakaliki.

Final Contest: The host of executive representatives of the state education board will chair the event alongside the State NYSC coordinator.

Exhibitions

Exhibition of Indigenous Technology, by each of the 13 best schools representing their respective Local Government Areas in compliance to this agreement:

  1. The product must be in compliance with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Local Content Policy.
  2. Items must be invented or produced by students and exhibited by them.
  3. Products can be of any field but of indigenous technology.
  4. Processes involved in the production, aspect of local content involved and usefulness to the Nigerian economy must be properly explained by students in concise terms.
  5. Strict adherence to the time frame allotted.
  6. However other rules shall be decided by the judges. Hence the judges’ decision is final.

Judges:  The panel of Judges shall include persons from relevant agencies of government and the private sector as well as selected serving corps members. In other words, five persons shall constitute the panel of judges.

1st Position

  1. Gold Plated trophy + ₦40000 cash
  2. 3 dozens of exercise books for contestants

2nd Position

  1. Silver-plated trophy + ₦30000 cash
  2. 3 dozens of exercise books for contestants

3rd Position

  1. ₦20000 cash
  2. 3 dozens of exercise books for contestants

4th Position

  1. ₦10000 cash
  2. 3 dozens of exercise books for contestants

Certification

Each participating school will receive a certificate of excellence and certificate of participation depending on performance. Similarly, each two (2) exhibitors representing each school shall receive a dozen of exercise books like their quiz counterparts.
